Stunned, I stood still there long enough to finally
realize the sting across my cheek. I slowly move my hand and touch the red
spot. Droplets of warm water suddenly came out, flowing down. My cheek hurts even
more whenever the salty liquid touches it.
“Enough is enough! I will not let you talk
about my best friend like that again!” He snapped at me furiously. Strange
enough, I couldn’t see his face through my bleary eyes. I could only stare at
his moving lips. Bit by bit, the noise around me starts to fade away. I saw him
move away but I couldn’t stop him. Wait, why do I want to stop him? I don’t
know. Who is he to me? I don’t know. To be more accurate, I don’t remember
anything. My mind went blank due to the impact of the shock. I just remain
standing there as the clock starts ticking.
Tick, tick, tick… why hasn’t the clock stop
ticking? Oh… the time can’t just stop suddenly.
I came to my senses when my feet felt
something furry. I looked down and saw a cat is rubbing its head against me.
The cat looked at me, as if asking what’s wrong. Naturally, I lower myself and
pet the cat then start to pack my stuff that drop right after the blow. I was
out for a long time as I could see the full moon shines brightly in the dark
sky. It shines so bright, as if it’s trying to enlighten these intense
pressures of me.
As soon as I enter my house, another blow hit
the other side of my face. Now both sides are equally red, I thought. I was
actually expecting that since she wasn’t the kind mother that you thought she
would be.
“Where have you been? Do you know what time
is it now? As your punishment, you shall wash the front porch and tend the
garden tomorrow morning. No excuses, whatever you have been doing.” Snapped the
woman who slapped me in the face stare down at me.
“Yes, Becky.” I replied and instantly head
towards my bedroom and grabbed a wet towel to cool down the red area across my
cheek. That’s why I never like being at home. No one is nice to me, only my dad
but he doesn’t show in front of Becky.
Becky is my father’s second wife (I wouldn’t
want to admit her as a mother) after my mom. My mother passed away when I was
merely a toddler, that’s why I’m the only child. Then just a few years back, my
father’s business gone bad and needed someone to support the family, so he somehow
got married to Becky. Becky come from a wealthy family, but of course the
marriage wasn’t one sided. She also needed my father for her business to
advance even more since my father had many connections in the higher up
society. However, I never knew why he doesn’t use this advantage to advance by
himself instead. I think he just doesn’t want to support me alone.
Other than that, Becky had a son, not much
older than me. Although he doesn’t bully me for pleasure just like his mother,
he doesn’t talk much. He doesn’t show his emotion much nor do he ever talk to
me for no reason. Andrew is always locked up in his room; I never knew what
he’s been doing. Despite that, he’s a genius in computer and in academic. I do
ask him question but he just help me, like we weren’t related at all. I guess
he’s the quite type.
Home wasn’t as sweet as before Becky and her
son came. Even if I lived in poverty, I was happy. After what happened with Kye
earlier, I feel like I don’t belong in this world anymore. I thought of suicide
but my heart keep telling me no. I shed my tears while looking at the only
photograph I have of my mother. I wished she were here, so I have someone I
could talk to. I missed her and I still remember vividly her gentle smile and
her lovely voice. That night, I cried myself to sleep.
Sleep my little darling…
Sleep tight in the beautiful moonlight…
Tomorrow will be a wonderful day…
Dream a dream you love…
Always follow your heart…
I was awakened by the sound of my alarm
ticking on my bedside table. I was dreaming about my mother again and her
melodious lullaby. No matter how old I am, I always remember her lullaby. I got
out of bed and start washing up. Before I left my room, I looked at my mother’s
photograph.
“I shall take my leave, mother” I whispered
and head downstairs to do what I’m supposed to today; wash the porch and tend
the garden. The thought of it makes me want to puke. Why that stepmother has to
boss me around all the time?
My house is a double story and is located in
bungalows area with a wide field of garden. By just tending to half of the
plants could take more than 3 hours. While
I was tending the bushes near the gate, I could see the children playing in the
playground with a small road in between. Their faces were so happy and
carefree. I really envied their carefree lifestyle, as I couldn’t enjoy life as
they do when I was their age. I’m just like a bird in a cage. I can only go out
to school and buy groceries. For that, many girls my age doesn’t hang out with
me as they say I’m “boring”.
While I was daydreaming and soliloquizing, a
ball came bouncing into my house. Startled by the round object, I immediately
pick it up when a little girl rushing by. I opened the gate and passed it to
the girl. The girl thanked me and started crossing the road. I was about to
shut the gate when I saw her tripped over her shoe lance and in a distance I
heard a vehicle driving fast towards here. Without hesitance, I instantly
opened the gate wide and help the girl….
The little child just stared bewilderedly at
the coming truck and was wide eyed. I got hold of her and pushed her as far as
I could… the driver didn’t bother to honk at us. Before it approach, it suddenly
make a sharp turn and hit the walls of my house.
This time, it’s my turn to be in the state
of shock…. Without recalling anything that happened to me, everything went
blank.

The tapping of keyboard, the clicking of a
mouse, Andrew is still facing the neon screen since morning. He finally
finished designing the game he always wanted to, despite being just a high
school student. From where he sat, he could hear the uproar of the children
playing nearby. Both parent were out working, so they left him in charge of the
house.
He got up from his seat and to the window
to unstiffen himself. There he could see his younger stepsister, Cally, tending
the garden as she promised his mother the night before.
“I wonder where she’s been last night… It’s
kind of rare of her to be back at the very late hour.” He thought to himself.
A ball came flying into the house and his
thoughts were disrupted. He stared down the window as the little girl made her
way up to the house. The two of them exchanged smile as Cally returned the
ball. Everything seems normal but as he was about to return to his place, he
heard a loud crash against the wall and a shriek of a young girl. He instantly
turned his head back to the window and saw a large trunk crashed into the wall
of the house. The little girl was there, standing at the other side and seems
to be in shock. Remembering his sister was there; he quickly makes haste to
where the incident happened.
When he got to the scene, the older girl was
caught in between the heavy vehicle and the wall. Her legs were trapped and she
seems unconscious. Cally was seriously injured and he could see blood is still
rushing out and soon form a tiny pool of blood. He asked the children nearby to
call for emergency and that’s when he saw the terrified kid’s knee was bruised.
From there he can conclude that Cally here pushed the little girl to safety.
The driver inside was too unconscious. After a few minutes, help came and
brought the both of the victim to the emergency ward. After that, he
immediately called his parents while hopping into the ambulance with his
sister and the driver.
He never felt the feeling lost in his life. This event really made him panic (though he doesn't show it) and the only thing he could do is to hope that she survive.
